Heart disease survivor

Screen-Shot-2017-09-29-at-3.38.41-PM“When you don’t get to take everything for granted, when you could lose it all, it puts everything in a much different perspective. I am a life-long athlete, adventurer, world traveler and philanthropist. I’ve been a soldier, a coach, a friend and a husband. I am also a survivor of heart disease. I am fortunate enough that I had open-heart surgery a couple years ago, which gave me an extension on life. It didn’t cure my disease, but it gave me more time, and all of those things that I just mentioned became more valuable. Just because I have heart disease doesn’t mean that I can’t do things. Yes, there are limitations, but it simply means you have to work a lot harder. I have had the opportunity to go back on adventures and to travel the world again. I am blessed with an amazing wife and amazing friends. I’ve been back to South East Asia to do philanthropic work. I have also gotten back into athletics and competitive sports. I may not be as fast as I used to be, but the finish lines have a whole new meaning. Like most people who live with heart disease or a limiting condition, I battle depression almost daily. But, training is one of the most powerful tools I have to fight that dark depression. It’s your choice if you choose to quit, survive or thrive. I choose to thrive. It’s a fight, but it is one worth fighting for.” – HOKA fan Kyle Watson
